The Gesshin™ Magnesia Stone Set includes our Magnesia 320, 1500, and 3000 grit stones. These stones are entirely splash and go... they require no soak whatsoever. Just a splash of water and they are ready to go. In fact, its very important that these stones are not soaked, as they will fall apart. You will notice that the stones are lacquered on all sides but one. The non-lacquered surface is the usable surface (the opposite side from where our logo is). Because of the way these stones are bound together, they are a bit more brittle than the other stones we have in stock. It is very important to round or chamfer the corners of the stone before and after flattening to prevent chipping along the edges. Initially, the stone surface will show some small pockmarks and swirly textures. It is not necessary to completely flatten this all out, though it will eventually flatten out over time.
We highly recommend flattening these stones before initial use. The top layer of the stones need to be removed for peak performance. This can be done by either flattening or using the stones until that layer is gone.
The 320 stone acts as the coarse stone in the set. It's quick cutting and a bit slower dishing than our 400 ceramic stone. The 1500 is the medium grit stone. It leaves a polish a bit higher than what one might expect for this grit, and is a totally acceptable stopping place if you prefer a more toothy edge. The 3000 also polishes better than one might expect for this grit range. Though it does not leave contrast between hagane and jigane, it does leave a very consistent and even polished edge. The resultant edge is nicely refined with a solid amount of bite, if that's your thing. The alumina-based abrasives in these stones work well on a wide variety of steels. The surface of the stones may look as if they are loading up while sharpening (i.e., they become blackish), but as you add water, you will notice that the stones do not load as they cuts.
