Shobu (Small) 160x55 #2

  • This is a normal stone sized shobudani suita.  It has some visible su (holes) and a light renge pattern (purple/red dots).  Aside from that, the surface looks clean and smooth.  This is a relatively hard stone, but not super hard.  The cutting speed and mud development are still nice and fast though.  The stone feels smooth, and provides a nice resistance in tactile feedback.  The finish it leaves is extremely nice and smooth, with great contrast.  It is able to create this finish very quickly and easily.  While the hagane is not mirror polished, it has a mirror-like misty white look.  The jigane is not super deep in color, but the contrast is there.  The scratch pattern is relatively fine, and barely visible.  All in all, an excellent finishing stone for wide bevel and single bevel knives.

Natural stones from this region are rich in silica, which acts as a main abrasive. The potential finish can improve with extended sharpening, with results depending on the stone hardness, the pressure you use during sharpening, water, etc.

This stone should be used like a splash and go stone... add just enough water to lubricate the surface, but not too much.  The goal is to develop mud, so keeping the surface very wet is prohibitive to mud development.
