Okudono Suita Koppa #3

  •  This koppa has a range of yellow tints and shades with a slight pink haze dispersed across the surface. There is a bit of renge and su (small cavities where gas was trapped when the stone was being formed) by the bottom right corner. It's a smooth stone and gets a bit grippy by the su. Slightly porous, the surface of the stone absorbs a bit of water, but should still be used as a splash-and-go. The stone is hard without being slippery and provides a bit of grip. This is the fastest cutting of the okudono suita koppa we just got in and leaves a fine scratch pattern. While not quite mirror polished, the stone leaves a fine mistiness on hagane.

Natural stones from this region are rich in silica, which acts as a main abrasive. The potential finish can improve with extended sharpening, with results depending on the stone hardness, the pressure you use during sharpening, water, etc.

This stone should be used like a splash and go stone... add just enough water to lubricate the surface, but not too much.  The goal is to develop mud, so keeping the surface very wet is prohibitive to mud development.
