Okudono Suita Koppa

  •  This is a small sized white suita (koppa refers to the size).  This is a finishing stone, but relatively fast cutting.  It should only be used as a splash and go stone, as its not porous.  The tactile feel is that of a medium-hard stone, and it provides a nice feeling of drag as you move across the stone.  However, its not gritty at all.  It seems to be a very clean stone, with no inclusions that can be felt.  It also provides a decent looking kasumi finish, while still being smooth and even.  Both the jigane and hagane are polished, but there is color to the jigane.  The hagane is misty white, verging on a mirror finish.  This should make a nice finishing stone for wide bevel and single bevel knives.

Natural stones from this region are rich in silica, which acts as a main abrasive. The potential finish can improve with extended sharpening, with results depending on the stone hardness, the pressure you use during sharpening, water, etc.

This stone should be used like a splash and go stone... add just enough water to lubricate the surface, but not too much.  The goal is to develop mud, so keeping the surface very wet is prohibitive to mud development.
