  • This is a large Aoto of medium hardness.  While it is harder than the monzento we carry, it is not what one would consider a hard aoto.  That being said, I wouldnt call it soft either.  I really enjoyed the tactile feedback on this one, and I found that it left a very nice and smooth finish, with great contrast.  While the scratch pattern was visible, it wasnt pronounced, and was relatively fine.  I would say this stone is in the 3k grit range.  The edge it leaves has nice bite, and its easily possible to stop at this stone.  All in all, a really nice medium grit aoto.

Natural stones from this region are rich in silica, which acts as a main abrasive. The potential finish can improve with extended sharpening, with results depending on the stone hardness, the pressure you use during sharpening, water, etc.

This stone should be used like a splash and go stone... add just enough water to lubricate the surface, but not too much.  The goal is to develop mud, so keeping the surface very wet is prohibitive to mud development.
