Kanshitsu is a technique and style of lacquer ware. This Kanshitsu handle uses wood powder mixed in with the lacquer. The rough finish of this surface is less easily damaged by scratching, and gives you a firm and comfortable grip… even when wet. Kanshitsu laquer ware is also surprisingly light weight.
Kanshitsu technique originated in China, and had been used for mainly for sculpture work. Today, the number of Kanshitsu craftsmen is drastically shrinking, and yet it has an amazing reputation and is greatly appreciated by those well versed in lacquer wares. Kanshitsu is known for allowing flexible, descriptive, and realistic expression through artistic works– kanshitsu pieces can look soft or hard, more like wood, or even like metal. Kanshitsu is one of the oldest and most famous traditional types of lacquer ware.
